Care at Home for Visitors and Short-Term Stays

In short: Yes, you can arrange home care for a visiting family member, even without long-term funding in place. If they already have Support at Home (SaH) funding, their existing provider can subcontract Ideally Home Care to deliver visits while they are here. If they do not have funding yet, private pay care can usually be set up within a few days. Either way, it starts with one phone call.

Having a family member visiting for a few weeks who needs help with daily personal care? Did you know you can arrange home care support quickly, even without long-term funding in place?

Whether your mother is staying with you for a month, or a relative is passing through the region and needs some extra help, short-term home care is possible and can often be set up within days.

There are two main ways to arrange this, depending on whether your family member already has government-funded care approved. We will walk you through both, along with what to expect and how fast the process can move.

Short-Term Home Care Is More Common Than You May Think

Families are spread out, especially in rural Northern NSW where children and parents often live hours apart. It is completely normal for an older parent to visit for a few weeks and need help with showering, medication, or simple daily tasks while they are away from their usual care team.

You do not need to be a permanent resident of our service area to receive care from us. We regularly support visitors, seasonal residents, and people staying temporarily with family in our towns.

The Two Ways to Arrange Temporary Home Care

There are two clear routes into short-term care, and which one applies to your family member depends entirely on their funding status.

1

Has Support at Home (SaH) Funding

Their existing provider subcontracts Ideally Home Care to deliver visits while they are staying in our region. No new assessment needed.

2

No SaH Funding, Private Pay

Care is arranged privately, with no government approval, assessments, or waiting periods required.

If Your Family Member Already Has Support at Home (SaH) Funding

If your relative already has Support at Home (SaH) funding approved through their usual provider, this is the easiest path. Their existing SaH Approved Provider can subcontract Ideally Home Care to deliver services while they are staying in our region.

Here is how it typically works:

  • Your family member’s current provider remains their official SaH provider
  • We are engaged as a subcontractor to physically deliver the care visits while they are here
  • Their existing funding and care plan carry across, so there is no new assessment needed
  • Once they return home, their regular provider simply resumes normal service

This arrangement relies on cooperation between the two providers, so the sooner you contact us, the sooner we can start the paperwork with their current provider.

If They Do Not Have SaH Funding, Private Pay Care

If your family member does not have Support at Home funding, or their approval has not yet come through, care can still be arranged privately. Private pay care does not require government approval, assessments, or waiting periods.

This option suits:

  • Visitors who are not yet in the aged care system
  • Family members who have applied for SaH but are still waiting on approval
  • Anyone who simply wants flexible, short-term support without funding paperwork

Private pay is often the fastest way to get care started, since there is no third-party approval needed.

How Quickly Can Short-Term Care Be Set Up?

Private pay arrangements can usually be organised within a few days of your first call, once we understand what support is needed and match the right staff member.

Subcontracted SaH arrangements depend partly on how quickly the existing provider processes the paperwork, but we work to get this moving without delay.

Either way, our first step is always a conversation to understand:

  • How long your family member will be staying
  • What kind of daily support they need
  • Whether they already have SaH funding in place

From there, we can tell you exactly which pathway applies and how soon we can start.

What Does a Typical Short-Term Care Visit Include?

Even for a one-month stay, we apply the same approach we use for our regular and long-term clients.

Client-Controlled Scheduling

You decide when visits happen, around your family’s routine.

Careful Staff Matching

We choose a caregiver suited to your relative’s personality and needs, not just whoever is available.

Continuity of Care

The same caregiver returns for each visit, rather than a rotation of unfamiliar faces.

Longer Visits

Enough time to complete personal care properly, without watching the clock.

Common-Sense Care

Practical, low-stress support focused on comfort and dignity, not box-ticking.

For a short stay, familiarity matters just as much as it does for permanent clients. Nobody wants to explain their care needs to a new person every single day.

Which Areas Can We Support This In?

We provide care across our service towns in rural Northern NSW, from Tweed Heads and Coolangatta down through the Northern Rivers and Clarence Valley, around Coffs Harbour, and along the Mid North Coast as far as Kempsey.

We support permanent residents and visiting family members staying in the region.

If you are unsure whether your relative’s location is covered, contact us directly, and we will confirm straight away.

How to Arrange Care for Your Visiting Family Member

The five-step process for arranging short-term care for a visiting family member 1 Call and share dates 2 Confirm funding situation 3 Contact existing provider if needed 4 Match a caregiver 5 Visits begin

Call us and tell us the dates: Let us know when your family member will be staying.

Share their funding situation: Let us know whether they have SaH approval or need private pay.

We contact their existing provider if needed: This happens when a subcontracting arrangement applies.

We match a suitable caregiver: Based on their personality and care needs.

Visits begin: Scheduled around your family’s routine.
